What garage door companies do

Most calls to a garage door company fall into a handful of jobs. Opener repair or replacement covers the motor unit, the drive and the remote and wall controls. Spring replacement is the most common failure: the torsion or extension springs carry the weight of the door, and they wear out on a cycle count rather than on age. Track alignment and cable repair deal with a door that binds, hangs crooked or has come off its rollers.

A routine safety inspection is worth booking yearly. A technician checks the door and opener by hand, adjusts spring tension, chain or belt tension, travel limits and closing force, and lubricates the moving parts. A fuller maintenance visit every couple of years also covers the rollers, hinges and weather seal.

Before you hire

Garage door work is licensed at state level in some states and at county level in others. Where a state register exists, listings on this site show the license number exactly as the issuing authority publishes it. Confirm it yourself on the state's own lookup, and ask any company you call for proof of insurance before work starts. Springs in particular store a lot of energy and are not a safe do-it-yourself repair.
